Prof. Adetola Daramola

Board Member

Prof. Adetola Olubunmi Daramola is a Pathologist with research interest in diseases that affect women, experimental pathology and genetics. In the past 8 years her research focus has been on breast cancer because of its aggressiveness in women of African ancestry. Together with local and international collaborators, she has investigated the molecular profile of a large cohort of women in south-west Nigeria and found a very high proportion of triple negative breast cancer (TNBC).

She interrogated Kaiso as a possible marker of aggressiveness in women with TNBC of African ancestry drawn from Nigeria, Barbados, Canada, North America and found it highly expressed in this group compared to their Caucasian counterparts. She and her colleagues are currently investigating the genetic causes of the high incidence of Triple Negative breast cancer in women of African Ancestry as well as its association with the metabolic syndrome in a multicenter Nigerian study. The proposed involvement of her centre in the Nigerian Breast Cancer Study is the consequence of her team’s existing collaboration in a multidisciplinary and multi-centre ARETTA clinical trial.

Her part, as one of the participating pathologists is to assess biomarker status of her subjects and determine those Nigerian women with HER2-positive breast cancer, who will benefit from a relatively less expensive and less toxic regimen of Taxotere and Trastuzumab. She has over 13 years’ experience of collaborating in varied multidisciplinary and multicenter research teams; and over 9 years in breast cancer biomarker specific research.

She attended the University of Lagos, where she graduated with an MBBS in Medicine and Surgery. In 1999, she finished from National Postgraduate Medical College, Nigeria with an FMCPath in Anatomic Pathology. Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia. It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth.
